A standard sewage pump and a grinder pump are two types of sewage pumps. Both are used to pump waste water from a low-lying area, such as a basement or crawl space, to a higher elevation where it can be safely discharged into a sewer system.
However, the key difference between the two is their durability, the size of the solids they are capable of handling, and their grinding mechanism.
A standard sewage pump is designed to pump wastewater that contains relatively large solids and debris, such as human waste and toilet paper. The solids are collected in a tank and pumped out in larger pieces.
A standard pump would typically be used in a residential basement. However, if a home located below the level of the sewer main, a sewage pump may be necessary to pump all wastewater up to the sewer main.
Standard sewage pumps are more susceptible to jamming and failure than a grinder pump.
A grinder pump is an upgraded version of a standard sewage pump. A grinder pump has a grinding mechanism that reduces the solids to a fine slurry, which can then be pumped out to the sewer system.
A grinder pump is ideal for areas where the wastewater contains a large amount of waste; such as food waste, kitchen grease, feminine products, wipes, and other types of waste that can clog a standard sewage pump.
In a commercial environment, it’s harder to regulate what people flush down the toilet. So a grinder pump is great for commercial usage, to prevent downtime or severe clogs.
Trinity Plumbing provides a range of services related to pumps; including installation, repair, replacement, & maintenance.
If a home or building is located below the level of the sewer main, a pump may be necessary to pump the wastewater up to the sewer line. Trinity Plumbing can help determine if a sewage or grinder pump is needed and provide installation services.
