Does hardwater cause plumbing issues? This question is from a client in Marietta, GA who called us to fix a leaking shower and broken shower cartridge.
Hardwater Buildup
We were at a client’s house to service a shower that was dripping. In the process, we noticed the showerhead had alot of hardwater stains and mineral buildup. When it was activated, (when on), not all of the jet streams of water came out of the shower head. It was squirting all over the place, not really a directional shower water flow as intended.
We instructed the client that we could replace it for them, or they could attempt to clean the shower head.
Clean Clogged Shower Head
One way that you can clean it is CLR product (Calcium, Lime, Rust remover), to soak the showerhead in that kind of solution.
Water Softener or Filtration System
The other thing we suggest is, that is you notice several of your fixtures with that kind of hard water stains, a water softener or filtration system can be installed to eliminate that from happening. Because if you see it on the outside of your showerhead, it’s going to build up inside of the valve mechanisms as well, and eventually that causes them to fail. In this case, that is why the shower was dripping – hardness buildup inside the shower valve cartridge.
