Can you flush gum down the toilet?

We often get Facebook messages asking, “Can you flush gum down the toilet?” It is not recommended to throw gum in the toilet as it can stick to the pipes and cause blockages. (Have you seen those tourist Gum Walls?!) Instead, it is best to wrap the gum in tissue or paper and throw it in the trash. This will help to prevent plumbing issues and keep your pipes flowing smoothly.

Flushing Gum Can Cause Problems

Flushing gum down the toilet may seem like an easy way to dispose of it, but it can actually cause a variety of problems for your plumbing system and the environment. Here’s why:

  1. Gum doesn’t dissolve in water: Gum is made of a type of polymer that doesn’t dissolve in water, which means it won’t break down and will likely get stuck in your pipes. Over time, this can lead to clogs and blockages, which can cause sewage backups and other plumbing issues.
  2. Gum can damage your plumbing: If gum gets stuck in your pipes, it can attract other debris and particles that can get stuck to it, eventually creating a blockage. In addition, if the gum is hard or sticky, it can damage the inside of your pipes, which can lead to leaks and other types of damage.
  3. Gum is bad for the environment: Even if your gum doesn’t cause any plumbing problems, it can still end up in our waterways and harm the environment. Gum is not biodegradable, which means it doesn’t break down over time. Instead, it can stick to plants, animals, and other surfaces, which can cause harm or even death.

Dispose Gum In the Trash

Can you flush gum down the toilet? NO. So, what should you do with your gum instead of flushing it down the toilet? The best option is to throw it in the trash. If you’re out in public and there isn’t a trash can nearby, consider wrapping your gum in a piece of paper or tissue and holding onto it until you can dispose of it properly.

Other Items That Should Not Be Flushed

In addition to avoiding flushing gum down the toilet, there are a few other things you can do to keep your plumbing system in good condition.

  • Avoid flushing any non-degradable items down the toilet, including wipes, feminine hygiene products, and paper towels. There are Things Your Should Never Flush Down the Toilet
  • Use a drain strainer in your sink to catch any food scraps or other debris that could get stuck in your pipes.
  • Avoid using too much toilet paper, because it can create plumbing problems.
  • Make sure you’re getting your plumbing system inspected and serviced regularly to catch any potential issues before they become major problems.
  • Is There Something Stuck in Your Toilet? Toys and knickknacks should not be stored on or near toilets.

Avoid Plumbing Problems

By taking care of your plumbing system and being mindful of what you flush down the toilet, you can help prevent clogs, blockages, and other types of damage that can be costly and inconvenient to fix.
